Hail to the Chess: Victorian Zonal Chess Tournament
While chess has always been “a thing” at Suzanne Cory High School, which is not a surprise given the competitive nature of our talented students - This year our students took the activity to a much more professional level.
Our students have participated in two official Victorian Zonal Tournaments this year. The first was hosted by Penleigh and Essendon Grammar School. The second was hosted at Suzanne Cory High School. The Suzanne Cory High School Victorian zonal tournament had an excess of a hundred participants from 11 different school from all regions of Victoria. Our students played some amazing games during both tournaments and demonstrated high level of self-discipline, time management, analytical and forward thinking skills.
By the end of the tournament four of our students qualified to play at the state finals. This is significant as it is the number required to form a school team to represent our School in such a prestigious tournament, the Victorian state Secondary open finals, which will be held on Monday the 16th of October 2017 at Brighton Grammar School.
The team members (in alphabetical order) are,
- Alan Nguyen (year 12)
- Alexander Tizzani (year 10)
- Benny Nguyen (year 12)
- Kisara Perera (year 9)
Finally, Suvasini Tamilchelvan, qualified to participate at the the Victorian State Secondary Girls finals, which will be held on the 17th of October at Lauriston Girls School.
Congratulations to the team members, and to all participants, on their amazing achievement. We wish them the best of luck.
