Senior Girls Badminton Competition – Second Round, 1 August 2017
- Divya Venkatesan
- Siantelle Johns
- Malshi Gamalath
- Sarah Nguyen
- Anagha Giri
Our Senior Girls team had a challenging day at Altona badminton stadium on Tuesday 1 August, in the second (district) round of the schools competition and, as always, represented the school with impeccable style and sportsmanship.
They played an impressive first round, beating Matthew Flinders school by 6 games to 0. The second match in our group was tougher, and we lost to Braybrook by 5 games to 1. Malshi won her singles in this round, with Sarah making a valiant comeback from 19-9 down in her singles game to lose by a narrow margin; our first doubles pair, Siantelle and Divya, also had close singles games, and Anagha and Malshi fought a hard match in their doubles in this round.
That put us through to the semi-finals against the winning team from the other group, St Albans. We haven’t played them before and they too proved too strong for us, with another 5-1 score again that doesn’t reflect how close the games were. Siantelle fought hard for a close loss in the singles, and Sarah won her singles in this round. We had to concede the final doubles when Malshi sustained a sprained ankle.
So, no state finals for the girls this year: for the Year 11 girls, we’ll work towards next year… But we celebrate Siantelle Johns and Malshi Gamalath, our Year 12 players who have both represented the school in badminton for several years (as well as Lyn Tran, who was not available for this round) – I hope you continue playing when you get to university next year.
