English - Year 9 Incursion with Abe Nouk

English - Year 9 Incursion with Abe Nouk

Abe Nouk was illiterate when he arrived in Australia. Now an acclaimed spoken word poet and community educator, he speaks about his early years as a refugee, the marginalisation of young Sudanese men and his fierce love for his adopted country. Abe visited our Cohort of Year 9 students on May 16. The students had the following to say:

“Abe Nouk really captivated the audience from the moment he stepped into the room. He is the living example of someone who has gone through life’s worst and bounced back. He didn’t let his past define his future. He couldn’t read. He learnt to read. He couldn’t write. He learnt to write. By becoming a poet he has become an inspiration to students like me. He’s taught me that time should be spent wisely. And so, I will try.”

“The performance of Abe Nouk was very entertaining and interesting. The inclusion of the audience was one of the reasons why it was interesting and entertaining. From the performance I was able to learn how something you write can be incorporated into a very engaging act. He made everybody laugh at the appropriate moments and was serious when required. I was also inspired by his ability to change the mood of a serious event. It was easy to follow along and great poetry.”

“Honestly, that presentation / performance was one of the best that I have attended. It was interesting and intriguing without missing the point. Abe was very engaging by helping the audience relate to him by asking questions that linked back to his point. My favourite line was “don’t gamble with your time”. This stuck with me as I left the room. I realise just how precious time is. I realise that I can never turn back time; I can never relive my childhood or have a high school experience again. This made me sad and made me feel small but also made me acknowledge the importance of time. Abe Nouk was an exceptional speaker. He added every bit of emotion needed to express his point. He engaged the audience through humour, his story was emotional and touching, his pauses and phrases were used to evoke feelings. This was a performance that was very eye-opening.”

“The Abe Nouk incursion for year the 9 cohort was an amazing experience. Abe Nouk is an amazing individual who is extremely funny. His story of struggling to migrate with his family from South Sudan to Australia resonated with me. His speech was heartfelt and quite mesmerising. The way that Abe Nouk talked about hope inspires me to never give up on my dreams and to pursue them. In particular, his poetry was very inspirational and the way he presented himself was also very comforting.”
