English - Year 12 Excursion
Earlier this term, on a glorious Autumn day, 170 of our Year12 students and 7 VCE English teachers set forth on a journey across to the Eastern suburbs and descended upon the Drum Theatre in Dandenong to watch a production of Euripides’ Medea, performed by Complete Works Theatre Company. At the end of the performance, we were treated to a Q & A from the director, cast and an academic, all of whom provided interesting insights on the historical context, ideas and thematic concerns of the play.
Our quest might not have been as arduous as that faced by Jason and his Argonauts and unlike Medea, we faced few obstacles in pursuit of our goals. However, in the process of travelling and witnessing mere mortals engaged in internal and external conflict that ends in tragedy, we learnt many invaluable lessons about the human condition and the values we hold dear. We resolved not to be “scuppered” by the next wave of challenges, or be “deceived in our destiny”. Rather, we shall endeavour to “fasten our stern cable” to those we trust and to strike a balance in life, because “moderation in practice is by far the best”.
All students undertaking Year 12 English will be undertaking their final Unit 3 Assessment Task on this play during Week 10 of this term.
