Sport - Term 2

Sport - Term 2

The start of Term 2 has been very busy with intra and interschool sport.

State Swimming

A huge congratulations to Alexandar Ikanovic (Yr12) who competed in the State Swimming in 4 events.  Alexander finished in the top 4 in all races and achieved a 2nd in the 50m backstroke. This is an outstanding achievement and we wish him all the very best in his swimming career beyond Suzanne Cory High School.  Also well done to the year 9 boys who swam in the 4x50m freestyle relay and finished third. Hopefully we see more of these students as they move through the senior years.

AFL

This term we have seen the intermediate AFL team compete and hold their own against some good competition.  They did not post a win but they developed as a team and had a good time.  It would be great if these boys can continue to play each year so we are represented in more divisions in the future.  We almost had a girls AFL team but some late withdrawals caused this team to fold.  Next year ladies let’s make this a priority.

Senior Sport

The 28th April was a full on day of sport we had Netball, Badminton and Table Tennis playing at Eagle Stadium.  It was a successful day overall with the Senior girls Badminton and Senior boys and girls Table Tennis all progressing to the WMR competition in August.  The Senior Basketball was also held early in Term Two once again it was the senior girls who progressed to the WMR.  The senior boys only just missed out finishing second in a close match.

Well done to the following teams for competing in Geelong at the WMR level.  Intermediate Softball, Intermediate Tennis, Senior Baseball.  All teams showed great sportsmanship even in defeat.  This was especially evident with the Intermediate Softball, the first game of the day was the team’s first game of softball ever.  The girls listened attentively to the coach and the umpire and their skills improved out of sight from the start of the day to the end. The team finished with an outstanding win against Williamstown.  I feel like this is the start of some good softball teams at Suzanne Cory High School.

Intra-school Sport

Intra-school sport is in full swing with Year 9’s in their house play off this week, students have embraced the house spirit.  Next week will see the start of the second rotation of sports; Badminton, Netball, Hockey and AFL.  We have the North Melbourne Football club coming in to run AFL sessions and an introduction to Hockey session for students.  The VCE sport is also back underway after some interruptions with student free days and public holidays. The students are participating in a wide variety of activities including activities like; golf, lawn bowls, archery, gymnastics, ten pin, soft lacrosse, yoga, gym classes and table tennis.  Students seem to be engaging with the program but they are reminded that attendance is compulsory and so is wearing their sport uniform for the session.

This Term we also had Rob and Daniel from exsight sport come in and run a goalball session with each year 9 PE class.  Goalball is a sport designed for the vision impaired, the session was not only fun but really broadened students perspectives on sport with disability.  We have since acquired a goalball set and will play some more games in class.  The years 9’s were very thankful for the opportunity to try something different.
