Student Leadership Q&A with North Melbourne Football Club
On Wednesday, the SCHS Leadership students had a glimpse at the life being in the AFL and everything that comes with being in an elite sporting league. Andrew Swallow, Shaun Higgins, Jed Andersen, and Declan Watson from the North Melbourne Football Club came to tell us about their environment and we were able to draw comparisons between our school life and their career. While as student leaders, we do not all play sport but we found that the players were in a pressurised position, with not only the media following their every move but also the pressure of performing to the highest standard, both on and off the ground.
The players advised the students to set mini goals to reach along with continuing to perform at the same level whenever we experience a set back. The players touched on the importance of keeping a healthy mindset and staying healthy while training hard. The significance of a balanced lifestyle and having a hobby was a recurring topic. However, these points may have not been what the students took away as the most significant piece of information. The players touched on the importance of sleep and how essential it is to be well rested, all of them averaging eight hours a night, something students found to be a luxury. Nevertheless, the experience speaking to the players not only inspired many of the students, but gave us determination to keep on going strong in the position we had earned.
